2021-2022 Academic Year Updates

The Denton CAPS West Jones Hall location is currently undergoing major construction. Effective Aug. 23, 2021, until further notice, Denton CAPS has relocated to Old Main, room 307.

Space limitations at the Old Main location, the need for consistent and equitable service delivery across all our campuses and the health and safety of our community necessitate that we conduct our work primarily via telehealth. CAPS Denton, Dallas and Houston will offer services virtually with in-person services provided on a case-by-case basis. All group therapy will be offered virtually.

Student feedback regarding telehealth, including increased ease of scheduling and improved access to services, has been overwhelmingly positive since March 2020. We remain committed to our mission to provide high-quality, culturally-responsive and accessible mental health services to enrolled students across all campuses and online despite the challenges of a renovation at our largest location and ongoing COVID-19 concerns.

All mental health providers and clients are strongly encouraged to follow CDC recommendations, including obtaining a COVID-19 vaccine, wearing a mask indoors, and practicing social distancing to maintain the health and wellbeing of campus community.  Thank you for your efforts to care for yourself and others.

If you have any questions about our services or need to speak to a CAPS staff member, please call the Denton CAPS location at 940-898-3801. CAPS staff members at this number can address concerns for the Dallas, Denton and Houston campuses as well as Denton students, on-line students, faculty and staff.

Tips for Engaging in Telehealth

CAPS staff offer sessions by HIPAA compliant Google Meet videoconference or phone. If you prefer videoconference, you will need to provide an email address. If you prefer to meet by phone, you will be asked to provide your phone number and permission for us to leave you a voicemail.

  • Test your equipment before your first TeleMental Health appointment to identify any technical issues or barriers to engaging in TeleMental Health services. Should you need assistance, please contact TWU IT at 940-898-3971. Computers, tablets, and cell phones with cameras may be used.
  • Ensure you have access to Wi-Fi with good bandwidth or a strong cell signal.
  • Choose a place where you have privacy and feel safe. This will help ensure confidentiality and reduce the likelihood of being overheard by others around you.
  • Be stationary and do not drive or walk during your session. If you will be joining the meeting from your car, please be in a parked position.
  • Use headphones if possible (preferably noise cancelling). Headphones can minimize distractions and increase privacy further ensuring confidentiality.
  • Place phones on silent and put them away, if not using them to access services. Deactivate background app sound notifications.
  • Log in 5-10 minutes before your appointment to allow time to trouble shoot any technical issues and to maximize your scheduled appointment time. You may also use this time to settle in and make yourself comfortable.
  • Wait for therapist to connect with you at the time of your appointment.
  • At the start of your session, your therapist will ask you to confirm your current location and a call back number where you can be reached should we have technical difficulties or your connection gets dropped/disconnected.

Intake Appointments

If you are interested in scheduling a new intake appointment for individual, couples, or group services, please contact CAPS at 940-898-3801 to leave a voicemail with your contact information and a CAPS staff member will be in contact with you.

Denton Psychiatry Appointments

Dr. Islam offers sessions through via phone. This includes initial evaluations and follow up appointments. Due to COVID-19, all fees for psychiatry appointments will be charged to your student accounts. If you are scheduled for a psychiatry appointment with a different provider, please contact that provider directly to determine your next steps.

In Case of an Emergency

In a medical emergency at any time, please call 911 first.

If you are experiencing a mental health emergency at any time of the day or night, please call Denton DPS at 940-898-2911 and ask to speak to the on-call therapist. DPS will take your contact information and a therapist will return your call. Our after hours on-call therapist responds to calls from Denton, Dallas, and Houston.

Managing Stress and Anxiety during COVID-19 

  • The CDC has created this resource related to mental health and coping during COVID-19.
  • The TWU CAPS website also includes a comprehensive Mental Health Resources section with a series of mind body guided exercises, a listing of mental health apps to support and encourage positive mental health practices which may be particularly helpful during periods of increased stress and anxiety, and a variety of self-help materials.
  • Optum’s emotional-support help line for students with anxiety or stress due to COVID-19 includes access to specially trained mental health specialists through their toll-free help line number, 866-342-6892, open 24/7; service is free of charge and open to anyone.

Scope of Care

TWU CAPS provides short-term therapy and consultation to students who are experiencing emotional and psychological problems that are interfering with their academic performance and personal well-being. Our purpose is not to provide long-term or intensive treatment for chronic or severe mental illness or mental health problems. CAPS reserves the right to determine if we have adequate resources and expertise to address your particular treatment needs. If your needs cannot be met by CAPS, we will work with you to secure an appropriate referral.

Emotional Support Animal Notice 

Requests for documentation related to Emotional Support Animal accommodations are considered on a case by case basis for existing clients only. When it is determined that a letter of support is warranted, CAPS staff will provide a written summary of your course of treatment and diagnosis. Although we are glad to assist you in this manner, please note that we do not offer a formal recommendation for accommodations and that any decision regarding the need for an Emotional Support Animal will be at the sole discretion of the party for whom the documentation is being provided.
